What is UKBOTA?
UKBOTA — **United Kingdom Bunkers On The Air** — is an amateur radio activity scheme that combines radio operating with the exploration and preservation of Britain’s military and civil-defence heritage.
At its heart, UKBOTA encourages licensed radio amateurs to activate historic bunkers, command posts, radar sites, airfield structures, and Cold War installations, making radio contacts from locations that once played a vital role in the nation’s defence. Operators around the world can then work these stations “on the air”, logging contacts that connect radio communication with living history.
UKBOTA is non-competitive, welcoming, and firmly rooted in experimentation, learning, and respect for the sites involved.
A Brief History of UKBOTA
UKBOTA began as a grassroots idea among UK radio amateurs who shared two passions: radio communication and defence heritage. Inspired by other location-based operating schemes, UKBOTA set out to create something distinctly British — focused on the country’s extensive network of wartime and Cold War structures.
Early activations centred on familiar sites: Royal Observer Corps posts, WWII bunkers, radar installations, and airfield remains. As interest grew, so did the scope of the programme. The UKBOTA site database expanded, documenting hundreds of locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — many little-known, some long forgotten.
From the outset, UKBOTA placed strong emphasis on:
- Accuracy of historical information
- Responsible access and site protection
- Encouraging portable, low-impact radio operation
- Education and public awareness
UKBOTA has always been community-driven, maintained by volunteers and supported by activators and chasers who share a respect for both radio practice and historical context.
What UKBOTA Is Today
Today, UKBOTA has evolved into a mature, well-established activity scheme with an international following.
Modern UKBOTA includes:
- A structured site reference system covering WWII, Cold War, and post-war installations
- Regular activations by portable operators using HF, VHF, and UHF
- Annual themed events, including airfields and ROC focused activations
- Growing interest from historians, museums, and site custodians
- An active online community of activators and chasers worldwide
Crucially, UKBOTA is about more than points or logs. Each activation tells a story — of the site, its people, and its place in history — shared live over the airwaves.
UKBOTA continues to develop organically, adapting to new operating modes, new technologies, and new generations of radio amateurs, while staying true to its original ethos.
What Is WWBOTA?
WWBOTA — Worldwide Bunkers On The Air — is the natural international extension of the UKBOTA concept.
While UKBOTA focuses on sites within the United Kingdom, WWBOTA provides a global framework that allows bunker and defence-related activations anywhere in the world to be recognised under a shared banner.
WWBOTA brings together:
- Operators activating bunkers, shelters, and military structures worldwide
- A common philosophy of respectful, historically informed operation
- International participation and cross-border contacts
- A shared interest in preserving and highlighting defence heritage through amateur radio
WWBOTA is not intended to replace national schemes, but to link them, allowing activations from different countries to coexist within a broader global context.
UKBOTA and WWBOTA — Shared Values
Both UKBOTA and WWBOTA are built on the same core principles:
- Respect for sites — no damage, no disturbance, no unauthorised access
- Respect for history — accurate information and thoughtful interpretation
- Respect for radio — good operating practice and technical curiosity
- Community first — open, friendly, and non-commercial
Together, they represent a unique way of combining amateur radio with historical exploration — bringing voices, signals, and stories back to places that once stood silent.
